OUR STORY

Life. Chapter 2.

We met playing outside and we'll spend the rest of our lives together playing outside. Life-long nature and adventure lovers, we purchased our farmland in 2015 and began building our future. Doug grew up on a beef farm before spending 21 years in the U.S. Army. Julia has a 20-year career in business and a history of getting lost in the woods (only sometimes on purpose). Ready to fully embrace a self-sufficient lifestyle, we put our passions and experiences together to create the perfect farming team. We're working harder than we ever have and it's never been more rewarding. Now we're excited to share that with all of you!!

ABOUT BEAR RUN FARM

Bear Run Farm is located on 160 acres in the heart of Western Pennsylvania's Laurel Highlands. Our livestock graze about 30 acres of pasture, we grow hay on another 20 acres and the remainder is a lush forest of hardwoods. We are surrounded by the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy and the Bear Run Nature Reserve where we spend much of our free time hiking, exploring and foraging! We take pride in the fact that our freshwater spring is the headwater for Bear Run which continues down the mountain for 5 miles where it passes under Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) before pouring into the Youghiogheny River at Ohiopyle.

Our primary focus is small meats but our property provides many other opportunities for us to share the fruits of farming and Mother Nature. We are still young in the farming business, but as we grow we hope to add harvests from our forest (like maple syrup!) and share the farm experience with as many visitors as possible.

We feel lucky to be stewards of this magical land. Sustainability and conservancy are at the heart of everything we do. From livestock health to grazing to wildlife to timber management, we are constantly learning how to be better farmers. We have also been lucky to have some gracious mentors located nearby to help us on that journey, and it's important for us to pay that forward! Have any questions about farming? Goats? The Laurel Highlands? Give us a shout!! We'd love to share our bounty with you!

The primary benefit of sustainable farming is that it's a win-win for everyone. The earth is healthier. Our animals are healthier. Our meat is healthier. Our customers are eating healthier. And we're happier! What's not to love??
